Discover Groundbreaking Innovations in Food Safety and Testing: Highlights from AOAC International Awards

AOAC International recently celebrated its Annual Meeting & Exposition in San Diego, California, from August 23-28, 2025. This event recognizes leaders in food safety and analytical science. Various awards highlighted significant advancements in food testing methods and supplement analysis.

One standout award was the Harvey W. Wiley Award. It went to Eric Verdon, a chemist with the French Agency for Food Safety (ANSES). He has made notable strides in veterinary drug residue testing, improving how we detect harmful substances in animal products. This award, named after a key figure in food safety, is the organization’s highest honor. Verdon’s work impacts the safety of meat, eggs, and other products we consume.

Another recognition, the AOAC/Eurofins Foundation “Testing for Life” Student Award, was given to five students. Their research focused on crucial areas like food safety and authenticity. This award underlines the importance of fresh perspectives in the field.

The AOAC INTERNATIONAL/Herbalife Scholarship went to two students, Sheng-Luen Shih from the University of Wisconsin and Matej Maly from UCT in Prague. This scholarship supports research in the analysis of herbal and dietary supplements.

A highlight was the award for Method of the Year. The method, developed by Sean Austin and Denis Cuany, analyzes β-Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) in infant formula. This innovation helps ensure the nutritional quality of infant food products.

The Achievement in Technical and Scientific Excellence was awarded to the AOAC Gluten and Food Allergens Program. Their guidance on food allergen testing strengthens how the industry handles food safety.

The Best Manuscript Award went to a team from the FDA for their study on detecting maple syrup fraud using advanced chromatography techniques. This research helps protect consumers from adulterated products.

Earlier this year, AOAC signed a Memorandum of Agriculture with the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS). This agreement aims to improve food safety through shared methods and validation processes. The collaboration is a step toward ensuring safer food for everyone.
