Michael Ellington, Sonja Wilson, and Doug Skaff Jr. are the latest inductees into the West Virginia University (WVU) Hall of Fame. They will be honored in a ceremony at the Mountainlair on October 6, 2025.
Doug Skaff Jr. will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award posthumously. His three sons will accept the award as a tribute to their father, who passed away in a tragic car accident earlier this year.
Doug was a standout leader during his time at WVU in the late 1990s. He helped create the Mountaineer Maniacs, the largest student organization on campus, and co-founded the WVUp All Night program, which is still popular. He served as Student Government Association president and earned accolades for his leadership and academic performance.
After graduating, Doug became a successful business leader and a public servant. He represented Kanawha County in the West Virginia House of Delegates, focusing on education and economic development. His legacy continues through the Douglas J. Skaff Jr. Mountaineer Spirit Scholarship, which supports students in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics.
Michael Ellington dedicated 37 years to WVU, with 27 of those years as the director of the Mountainlair. He played a crucial role in enhancing student life through initiatives like FallFest and WVUp All Night. His work has made a lasting impact on campus culture.
Sonja Wilson also made her mark at WVU with 35 years of service. She was essential to many notable student programs and events. After retiring, she managed the Mountaineer Mascot Program.
Both Michael and Sonja were known for their kindness and commitment. Their contributions have shaped the campus and enriched student experiences at WVU.
In a recent survey by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, 78% of students reported that campus activities significantly enhance their college experience. This highlights the importance of figures like Doug, Michael, and Sonja in creating vibrant campus life.
As the spirit of WVU continues to thrive, the legacies of these remarkable individuals remind us of the power of leadership and community engagement.
