[Mild spoilers ahead for the season premiere of 9-1-1: Nashville]
Jessica Capshaw is back on our screens, stepping into a new role in 9-1-1: Nashville. After her time on Grey’s Anatomy, she’s trading the surgical scrubs for the life of a Southern matriarch. This new series, co-created by Ryan Murphy and others, debuted just before the 22nd season of Grey’s, building on that show’s legacy.
The spinoff stars Chris O’Donnell as Don Hart, a former rodeo rider turned fire captain at Station 113. Like its predecessors, it tackles intense emergencies but mixes in family drama reminiscent of Dynasty and Succession.
What’s different this time? Blythe, played by Capshaw, is not a first-responder. She’s from a well-off family, having fallen for Don against her father’s wishes. Their son, Ryan, follows in his father’s footsteps, leaving the family business under Blythe’s care.
Capshaw mentions that Blythe carries an air of confidence and warmth, offering a refreshing contrast to her privileged background. “Blythe’s efforts to connect with Don and their family is a central theme as the season unfolds,” she notes.
Their marriage faces challenges, especially with the arrival of Blue, Don’s son from a past relationship. As Dixie, Blue’s mother, encourages him to leverage the Hart family’s wealth, tensions rise. Capshaw finds this element particularly compelling. “It’s exciting to build a show with fresh dynamics, knowing the original had already charmed audiences,” she shares.
Capshaw’s character is pivotal in keeping the family united, often stepping into the firehouse to connect with the team. Blythe’s sense of calm, cultivated from her background, contrasts with the urgency of the firefighter’s world. “She brings a nurturing quality that supports Don and their family,” Capshaw explains.
As for how Blythe feels about the revelation of Don’s past, Capshaw sees it as complex. “Blythe has known about Blue for years. She’s not a victim; she understands their history and what it means for their future.” This nuanced take is what adds depth to her character.
Looking back at her time on Grey’s, Capshaw acknowledges the impact of her role as a pioneering lesbian character. Feedback from fans has been profound. Many have shared how Arizona Robbins’ storyline helped heal family rifts. “It’s amazing how storytelling can bridge gaps between people,” she says.
Capshaw’s relationship with Arizona has evolved, influenced by the show’s cultural significance. Now back in the ABC family for 9-1-1: Nashville, she is open to returning to Grey’s in a guest role. “I love that show and the characters,” she declares, leaving the door open for future appearances.
As for the fate of Arizona and Callie’s relationship, Capshaw leaves it to the fans’ imagination. “The beauty of fanfiction is that it allows the story to live on in unique ways,” she says.
9-1-1: Nashville airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC, followed by Grey’s Anatomy at 10/9c, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
