Can automatic shuffling machines be hacked to cheat in poker? This intriguing question was explored by journalist Andy Greenberg in a recent video that puts these machines to the test. The video, titled “I Cheated At Poker By Hacking A Casino Card Shuffling Machine,” quickly garnered over 100,000 views. In it, Greenberg speaks with Joseph Tartaro, a security consultant, and professional poker player Doug Polk.
Tartaro has spent years examining the vulnerabilities of machines like the Deckmate 2, commonly used in casinos and poker rooms. He reveals that many have a USB port that can be exploited. Tartaro demonstrates how a small device can tap into the order of cards during a shuffle. He explains that this device connects wirelessly to a phone, allowing a user to track the deck’s order in real-time.
In a private poker game, Tartaro hacks the shuffler. He signals Greenberg on whether to fold, call, or raise, using chips as cues. Even as a novice player, Greenberg ends up winning the game effortlessly.
Are Players at Risk?
Cheating through hacked machines is just one of many modern threats in poker. In October 2024, psychologist Maria Konnikova highlighted concerns about high-tech cheating methods, such as tiny cameras and electronic aids that could compromise fair play.
While automatic shufflers are widespread in regulated casinos, Doug Polk argues that private, unregulated games often present a greater risk. He notes that machines like the Deckmate 2, if modified outside of a casino’s control, become much easier to exploit. “In a casino, the machine is regularly checked by licensed professionals. But a black market machine? That’s a whole different story,” Polk explains.
The company that manufactures the Deckmate 2, Light and Wonder, claims they have updated the machines’ security features for all customers at no cost. However, Tartaro still warns that these machines pose a cheating risk.
Understanding the Concern
A survey conducted in 2022 found that nearly 30% of poker players believe cheating via technology is a significant concern in today’s games. This highlights a broader trend where players feel increasingly vulnerable, particularly in unregulated environments.
The implications are significant not just for trust and fairness in poker but for the gaming industry as a whole. With advancements in technology, staying ahead of potential cheating methods is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the game.
