Kentucky astrophotographer David Joyce recently captured a stunning image of a supernova remnant. This remnant, known as CTB 1, or the Garlic Nebula, glows with the light from an event that happened around 10,000 years ago when a massive star exploded.

The Garlic Nebula is located within the Milky Way, about 9,132 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. It has a unique shape and can be seen in different types of light, including radio and X-ray. The explosion that created the remnant also produced a pulsar, which travels away from the site at an astonishing speed of 2.5 million miles per hour.

Joyce’s pursuit of capturing this nebula was no easy feat. He mentions, “It was quite challenging to photograph from my suburban backyard. The Garlic Nebula is faint, so I spent over 50 hours just to capture more detail.” This dedication highlights the patience and skill required in astrophotography.

He used an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and a modern ZWO astronomy camera to take the image over seven clear nights last September. Each night brought him closer to achieving the vision he had for this photography since he began in 2020. His new camera made it possible to frame the nebula correctly, as it is nearly the same size in the sky as a full moon.

The success of Joyce’s image reflects a growing trend in astronomy where more people are engaging in astrophotography. According to a recent survey, over 60% of amateur astronomers reported capturing images of celestial objects, valuing the blend of art and science in their hobbies.
