Zanesville, Ohio, has been a hub of community support as local organizations recently came together to pack 400 food boxes. These boxes are aimed at helping healthcare providers and a college campus meet needs during tough times.
Katie Grubbs, Community Impact Manager at United Way of Muskingum Perry and Morgan Counties, shared that they noticed many people visiting healthcare facilities were hungry. Instead of sending them to food pantries, which can feel like an extra burden, they chose to deliver food directly. They teamed up with Kroger, gathered volunteers, and loaded up on food items to create the boxes.
Sabrina Barr, Operations Volunteer Coordinator, described the process of organizing and sorting these items. The effort was made possible thanks to a generous donation from NiSource, the parent company of Columbia Gas of Ohio.
Raquel Colon, NiSource Public Affairs Manager, emphasized the importance of community partnerships. She noted that with rising food insecurity, the NiSource Charitable Foundation aims to support basic needs in the community.
Today’s initiative reflects a growing trend. A recent survey found that about 1 in 8 U.S. households experience food insecurity at some point during the year. This highlights the importance of quick, direct support in local communities. Residents in need can reach out by dialing 211 for local food pantries or contacting Columbia Gas for assistance at columbiagasohio.com.
This act of kindness in Zanesville is not just a response to immediate hunger but a reminder of how communities can come together to support one another in difficult times.
