Modi’s Engagement with Indian Entrepreneurs in South Africa
In Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs during the G20 Leaders’ Summit. He encouraged them to strengthen ties with India. In a recent tweet, Modi called their discussions “fruitful,” highlighting their work in areas like FinTech, agriculture, and healthcare.
The meeting wasn’t just about business. Modi also spoke with members of the Indian community in South Africa. They shared experiences and showed appreciation for India’s achievements. Modi urged them to promote Indian culture, like Yoga and Ayurveda, among South Africans.
According to Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister praised the community as a “living bridge” between India and South Africa. The Indian diaspora, over 1.7 million strong, plays a significant role in fostering the friendship between the two nations.
Modi acknowledged the importance of connecting the youth to Gandhi’s and Mandela’s legacies. He received a special offering, a ‘Kalash’ from the Chinmaya Mission, filled with millets from both countries. This will be placed in the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban.
In addition to the community interactions, Modi met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss cooperation in multiple sectors, including trade and security. Shortly after arriving in South Africa, he received a ceremonial welcome, marking the first G20 Summit held on the continent. This year, the African Union joined as a member of the G20, a significant step for representation.
The engagement demonstrates how global interactions transcend beyond politics and economics into personal connections and cultural exchange. Such efforts not only strengthen diplomatic ties but also enrich the communities involved.
