SpaceX Postpones Launch of 140 Satellites with Reused Falcon 9 Rocket: What You Need to Know

A fleet of small satellites is still on Earth after SpaceX delayed their launch. The Liftoff was supposed to happen on November 26 but was called off just 15 minutes before the scheduled time. SpaceX hasn’t shared why the launch was delayed. The next chance to lift these satellites into orbit will be on November 28 at 1:19 p.m. EST.

SpaceX goes to great lengths to ensure a safe launch. A spokesperson explained, “A launch can go wrong in many ways, but it can only go right one way.” This highlights their commitment to safety. If there’s anything that seems off, they’ll stop the countdown.

This mission, called Transporter-15, is a rideshare opportunity for different customers. It aims to put dozens of small satellites into orbit. Originally set for November 19, the launch has faced several delays.

Among the satellites are several from Planet Labs, including 36 small “SuperDove” satellites for earth imaging. The European Space Agency also has two satellites on board for monitoring Earth’s water cycle.

Two launch providers, ExoLaunch and SEOPS, are contributing additional spacecraft to the mission. One of the more interesting payloads is from Varda, which aims to conduct unique experiments that can return to Earth after launching.

The Falcon 9 rocket is notable for using a first stage that’s already flown 29 times before. If things go as planned, this stage will return to Earth after launching, landing on a SpaceX drone ship in the Pacific Ocean. This reusable approach helps cut costs and is better for the environment.

Interestingly, the demand for small satellite launches has risen sharply in recent years. According to a recent report by the Space Data Association, the number of small satellite launches increased by 60% between 2020 and 2022. This trend highlights the growing interest in satellite technology for everything from climate monitoring to global communications.
