The Gilead Foundation has rolled out $3 million in grants to tackle food insecurity in communities across America. This funding will benefit 14 organizations dedicated to improving access to nutritious food. The selected groups are based in states like California, North Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
Among the recipients are the California Association of Food Banks Bay Area Collaborative, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. These organizations use innovative strategies to source and distribute food while also offering services like nutrition education and workforce training.
Shreya Jani, a senior vice president at Gilead Sciences, highlighted the strong link between food security and health. She noted that those facing food insecurity are at higher risk for serious health issues, from chronic illnesses to infectious diseases. The Gilead Foundation’s initiative, Healing Hunger, aims to partner with organizations that can provide critical support systems to improve overall health outcomes.
Food insecurity is a growing concern. Recent reports show that around 9% of U.S. households were food insecure in 2022, a figure that reflects broader economic challenges. By investing in local organizations, the Gilead Foundation is taking steps toward addressing this pressing issue.
