A significant new role has been established at the University of Exeter, thanks to a generous donation from Canadian philanthropist Sajjad Ebrahim. This position, called the Imam Sajjad Chair in Shi‘i Studies, will be part of the university’s prestigious Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies.
Dr. Kumail Rajani has been selected as the first chair holder and will start in the New Year. His work will focus on Twelver Shi‘i Islam, a branch of Shi‘i Islam that believes in twelve key Imams following the Prophet Muhammad.
Sajjad Ebrahim is deeply committed to philanthropy, supporting education, housing, and healthcare projects in countries like Canada, Pakistan, and India. His donation aims to uplift scholarship and advance understanding of Twelver Shi‘i beliefs.
Professor William Gallois, the institute’s director, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, stating it will nurture future scholars and lead to a deeper engagement with Twelver Shi‘i Studies. Ebrahim echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of Imam Sajjad, the fourth Shi‘i Imam, as a symbol of knowledge and piety.
Research in this area is critical. According to a 2021 study, understanding various Islamic branches can enhance intercultural dialogue and foster peace. The Imam Sajjad Chair is set to pave the way for innovative research and discussions in this field.
Dr. Rajani brings a wealth of knowledge, having taught in the Shia seminary in Qum, Iran, and earned his PhD at Exeter. His focus includes Qur’anic interpretation, Islamic law, and South Asian studies.
