MIAMI — Hockey is coming to Miami! Preparations are underway at loanDepot park for the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic. This will be the first outdoor ice hockey game in Florida, featuring the Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers on January 2.
The rink is gradually taking shape, complete with dasher boards, glass, benches, and penalty boxes. As workers set down the ice, excitement builds for this unique event. NHL executive Dean Matsuzaki shared lightheartedly, “We’re pretty sure we won’t be turning on the heated benches this time.”
The field, usually home to the Miami Marlins, is transforming into a hockey venue. One side will showcase a wintry scene, complete with a synthetic ice rink. The other half will capture the essence of South Beach with a street hockey setup.
With a capacity of 35,300, Matsuzaki noted the intimate feel of the venue: “This park has very little foul territory… It’s great for this game.” The tropical ambiance adds to the charm, with palm trees swaying just outside the windows.
The NHL has also brought in Mobile Refrigeration Units to help keep the ice solid in Miami’s warm weather. Currently, the stadium’s retractable roof is closed, allowing cool air to circulate. Ice will be created on 253 aluminum pans, utilizing a cool floor and refrigeration technology.
Climate control is a key focus. As Matsuzaki explained, maintaining a lower temperature is crucial, and the building’s design significantly aids this effort. When the game starts, the roof and windows will open, blending the indoor excitement with the outdoor tropical setting.
Weather looks promising for game day with a projected high of 70 degrees and no rain expected. Matsuzaki welcomed the cool temperatures, hoping for a slight drop to enhance the ice conditions. With meticulous planning, fans can anticipate an unforgettable winter classic in the heart of Miami.
This event marks a significant moment, blending the thrill of hockey with Florida’s vibrant culture. It reminds us how sports can bridge different worlds, creating a unique experience for everyone involved.
