The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has shared important guidelines for Nigeria’s new petroleum regulators aimed at promoting sustainable growth. Dr. Muda Yusuf, the founder of CPPE, emphasized these points in a recent statement.
He praised President Bola Tinubu for updating the regulatory structure by appointing new leaders at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). This change presents a chance to align regulations with goals for energy independence and increased production.
Yusuf stressed the importance of reducing import reliance and expanding local capacity. A key focus should be on supporting domestic refining. He argued that government policies must benefit locally refined products through fiscal and regulatory support, calling for an end to unfair competition from imports.
“For real competition, all operators need to work under the same policies and regulations,” he noted. He urged NMDPRA to prioritize domestic refining in line with Nigeria’s goals for industrial growth.
In the upstream sector, he highlighted the need to boost crude oil and gas production to attract more investments. This is crucial as the world shifts towards renewable energy. Yusuf suggested NUPRC aim to increase oil production to at least two million barrels per day.
Recent industry data indicates that Nigeria’s oil production has faced significant challenges, dropping to around 1.2 million barrels daily in recent months. This trend needs urgent attention. By taking decisive action now, Nigeria can optimize its hydrocarbon resources while it still has the chance.
In sum, Yusuf’s insights push for a clear vision in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. The plans involve focusing on local production, refining more at home, and drawing in investments. These steps could secure Nigeria’s long-term economic future while promoting energy independence.
