Sjoerd Marijne from the Netherlands is back as the head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. Hockey India made the announcement on Friday. Marijne previously led the team from 2017 to 2021, helping them achieve a historic fourth place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and break into the top 10 of the FIH rankings.
At 51 years old, Marijne takes over from Harendra Singh, who resigned last month. Singh followed Janneke Schopman, another accomplished coach, who left earlier this year after the team did not qualify for the Paris Olympics.

In addition, Dr. Wayne Lombard has been appointed as the head of athletic performance. He will work with Rodet Yila and Ciara Yila, who will provide scientific advice. Their expertise will be essential in enhancing the team’s physical capabilities.
Marijne’s first significant challenge will be the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers from March 8 to 14 in Hyderabad. He is set to arrive in India on January 14, with a national camp starting shortly after in Bengaluru. Dr. Dilip Tirkey, Hockey India’s president, emphasized the importance of fitness for the team’s performance. “It played a crucial role in our historic Olympic run,” he noted.
Reflecting on Marijne’s past achievements, he led the team to the Hockey World League semi-finals in 2017 and secured silver medals at the 2018 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy and the Asian Games in Jakarta.
