USU President Brad L. Mortensen and former Interim President Alan L. Smith have recently been celebrated for their contributions to Utah communities.
On January 6, the Ogden City Council declared a day in honor of Mortensen. This recognition highlights his leadership at Weber State University, where he significantly fostered growth and built strong partnerships with Ogden and nearby areas during his seven-year presidency. Mortensen expressed gratitude, saying, “I’m very grateful and humbled… My time working with the community at Weber will always be cherished.”
Meanwhile, on January 2, Smith was named Cache Valley’s Resident of the Year by The Herald Journal. This accolade acknowledges his influential role in leading USU through substantial changes, including strategic investments and reaccreditation processes. Smith shared that his motivation for stepping into the interim president role stemmed from a belief in the positive impact of higher education.
Both leaders share a personal connection to education as first-generation college students, which adds depth to their commitment to uplift others through learning opportunities.
Interestingly, the past few years have shown a growing trend in recognizing the achievements of leaders in education, especially in light of recent challenges. According to a 2022 survey by the American Council on Education, nearly 70% of college leaders reported feeling more valued by their communities compared to previous years.
