Dhaka has recently been highlighted as having some of the worst air quality in the world, ranking second with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 287. This rating falls into the “very unhealthy” category, according to the AQI standards.
To put it in perspective, Delhi tops the list at 384, followed by Kolkata at 202, and Addis Ababa at 192. These numbers indicate a significant concern for the health of residents.
The AQI measures daily air quality based on five main pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. When readings hover between 101 to 150, the air is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Anything above 200 signals serious health risks.
Historical data shows that Dhaka has struggled with air pollution for years, particularly in winter when conditions worsen. Interestingly, air quality tends to improve during the monsoon season.
According to the World Health Organization, air pollution claims about seven million lives annually worldwide, linked to severe health issues such as strokes and respiratory diseases. It’s a grave reminder of the risks we face daily.
Megan O’Neill, an environmental scientist, notes, “Cities like Dhaka need urgent policies to reduce pollution. Improved public transport and stricter regulations on emissions can make a significant impact.”
