The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is excited to announce the opening of the Local Food in Schools and Child Care Food Hub Grant. This funding aims to connect local food with Vermont K–12 students, benefiting them through collaborations with nonprofit food hubs. Food hubs can apply for funding that allows them to collaborate with different School Food Authorities (SFAs). Each SFA will receive a set amount to buy local food from these hubs.
Thanks to a one-time fund from the State of Vermont, $300,000 is available for projects that will run for two years, and notably, no matching funds are needed.
Mark your calendars! An applicant webinar will take place on January 28 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. to guide potential applicants through the process.
In another exciting opportunity, the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is inviting applications for the Education and Workforce Development program. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation in the food and agricultural fields by focusing on professional development for educators and training programs across various educational levels. Awards can range from $10,000 to $650,000, with applications accepted until December 31.
Additionally, the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Summit will occur soon, with early bird registration extending to January 30. This event will offer valuable insights into modernizing dairy operations, improving workforce skills, and mastering policy changes in the industry.
Meanwhile, on February 12, UVM Extension is holding a workshop on on-farm milk culturing for mastitis management at Billings Farm. Attendees will learn techniques for proper milk sampling and culturing, which could significantly enhance herd health and lower unnecessary antibiotic use.
Lastly, don’t miss the chance to join the Vermont Pavilion at the Summer Fancy Food Show from June 28–30 in New York City. This event is a fantastic opportunity for Vermont businesses to showcase their specialty food products and network with buyers and distributors from around the globe.
