Meta is about to shake things up with new subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. They recently announced this move to TechCrunch, indicating a focus on delivering exclusive features that boost user creativity and productivity, along with enhanced AI tools.
Over the next few months, Meta will roll out premium features while keeping the basic experiences free. What’s interesting is that each app will have its own unique subscription options. This means users can expect a varied experience across the platforms.
A significant part of this strategy involves Manus, an AI agent Meta bought for around $2 billion. They plan to integrate Manus into their products while also offering standalone subscriptions for businesses. There are hints of Manus AI being added to Instagram, demonstrated in a screenshot shared by Alessandro Paluzzi, a well-known reverse engineer in tech circles.
Meta is also launching AI-driven features, including Vibes, a tool for creating short videos using AI technology. Although Vibes has been free since last year, users will soon have the option to subscribe for enhanced video creation capabilities.
While specific details about WhatsApp and Facebook subscriptions remain unclear, Paluzzi noticed some exciting potential features on Instagram. These include unlimited audience lists, insights on followers who don’t follow back, and the chance to view stories without notifying the poster.
It’s important to mention that these new subscriptions are separate from Meta Verified, a service designed for creators and businesses with perks like a verified badge and 24/7 support. The upcoming subscriptions aim to cater to everyday users, offering broader access to features.
With this move, Meta hopes to increase its revenue. However, there’s a concern about subscription fatigue. People are overwhelmed with paid services already. For Meta to stand out, they’ll need to offer something truly appealing.
Interestingly, Snap has set a precedent for social media subscriptions. Their service, Snapchat+, launched at $3.99 a month, now boasts over 16 million subscribers, more than doubling in numbers since early 2024. This goes to show there is a demand for unique features in social media if presented well.
