Kansas State’s women’s soccer team is entering an exciting new chapter. Colleen Corbin, the head coach, is gearing up for her second season after a groundbreaking debut. The Wildcats achieved their first winning record in school history and shattered 48 records in just one season. That’s a huge deal!
Recently, Maddie Dobyns joined the coaching team as the goalkeepers coach and a key recruiter. Maddie isn’t new to success; she’s come from Kentucky, where she was part of a program that excelled, including a remarkable NCAA Tournament appearance.
During her time at Kentucky, Maddie helped train talented goalkeepers, like Marz Josephson, who dominated the SEC with a stunning goals-against average. Yet, despite her success, Maddie felt drawn back to her roots and took the opportunity to coach at K-State. She has a strong bond with the program, having grown up in Kansas City, Missouri.
“I always felt close to home,” Maddie says. “K-State has broken records and is building something special. It’s hard to say no to that.”
She’s excited to work with K-State’s current goalkeepers, Maddie Sibbing and Grace Pilling. Both are promising talents in the Big 12. Sibbing recently earned recognition as the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, and Pilling has an impressive background with Manchester City’s youth squads.
Maddie brings experience from her positions at various schools and has always believed in empowering her players. “Goalkeeping is all about effort,” she explains. “Mistakes happen, and what matters is how you respond.”
Coaching goalkeepers isn’t just about technique; it’s also about understanding their mindset. Maddie knows what it’s like to be in their shoes, having played herself. She emphasizes the need for strong personalities on the field. Traits like confidence and leadership are crucial for goalkeepers.
The Big 12 has seen its share of growth and diverse playing styles. As a coach, Maddie is thrilled to face different challenges with each matchup. “Every team brings something different,” she notes. “That variety makes the game that much more exciting.”
While her journey has led her back to Kansas, she feels grateful for her experiences. “This program didn’t even exist when I was growing up,” she reflects. “I’m just thankful for everyone who has supported me along the way.”
As K-State continues to build its legacy, there’s a buzz in Manhattan. Fans are eager to see how this new coaching staff and a fresh roster will shape the future of Wildcats soccer.
