The Golden State Warriors have made a bold trade, sending Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porziņģis, according to sources from The Athletic.
Kuminga, just 23 years old, has had a rollercoaster season. He started strong, averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in the initial weeks. After signing a two-year, $48.5 million deal, expectations were high. However, his performance fluctuated, leading to his removal from the starting lineup after a game against the Spurs in November.
Injuries further complicated his season. He missed seven games due to a knee issue and struggled to regain form upon his return. At one point, his absence from a game against the Thunder raised eyebrows, especially since coach Steve Kerr had mentioned he would play. This miscommunication didn’t help Kuminga’s standing within the team.
His situation changed dramatically after Jimmy Butler’s ACL injury in mid-January. Kuminga seized the opportunity, showcasing his skills in two games before suffering another setback—a bone bruise—during a loss to the Mavericks. Despite tensions with the coaching staff, he remained well-liked among teammates, including stars like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, who defended him repeatedly.
The trade for Porziņģis raises questions about the Warriors’ future strategies. While it seems to limit their chances of acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Bucks, sources indicate that the Warriors haven’t completely closed the door on pursuing him. There’s speculation that the Bucks may be waiting until the offseason for a more attractive offer, possibly allowing the Warriors to re-enter the conversation.
Porziņģis is a talented player, averaging 17.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in just 17 games this season. However, his injury history raises concerns. He struggled during the Celtics’ playoff run last season due to a mysterious illness, later diagnosed as POTS, and has missed significant time this year due to an Achilles injury.
Despite these challenges, Porziņģis remains a unique asset in the league. His ability to shoot from long distance and protect the rim makes him a valuable player when healthy. His current contract expires this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent.
In a separate move, the Warriors also traded Trayce Jackson-Davis to Toronto for a second-round pick in 2026.
