Russia’s Investigative Committee recently accused Ukrainian intelligence of attempting to assassinate Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev in Moscow. The alleged attacker, a man in his 60s from Ukraine’s Ternopil region, reportedly fled to Dubai after the incident and has since been arrested. Another suspect, identified as an accomplice, was also detained.
On Friday morning, the shooter opened fire on Alekseyev at a residential building. Fortunately, he survived surgery and doctors believe he will recover. A Makarov pistol with a silencer was found at the scene, indicating a planned attack.
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed that the suspect boarded a flight to Dubai right after the shooting. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin thanked the UAE for their help in apprehending the suspect.
In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine had no involvement in the attack. This incident marks a significant moment in ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with accusations and denials flying from both sides.
Historically, Alekseyev has been a contentious figure. In 2023, he was involved in negotiations related to the Wagner Group’s mutiny. He previously faced U.S. sanctions in 2016 for cyber activities aimed at undermining U.S. elections and was also sanctioned by the EU in 2019 after a poison attack in the UK linked to Russian agents.
This attack isn’t isolated; it fits a troubling trend of violence targeting high-ranking Russian officials. Last December, a Russian general was killed in a car bombing, which authorities attributed to Ukraine. In recent months, other senior military figures, like Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, have also been victims of attacks in Moscow.
Despite rising risks, the political stakes remain high. Public sentiment in Russia may be shifting as fears grow over the safety of military leaders amidst these violent incidents.
As these developments unfold, analysts will be closely watching not only the implications for Russia’s military strategy but also the broader geopolitical landscape. For more details on related tensions, you can refer to BBC.
