49ers Defensive Lineman Keion White Shot in Ankle in San Francisco: What This Means for His Recovery

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle early Monday morning in San Francisco, as reported by the San Francisco Police. The incident occurred around 4:06 a.m. on Mission Street during an event that included an altercation between two groups. While White was nearby, he was not involved in the conflict. He was taken to a local hospital for surgery, and he is expected to recover.

Police spokesman Evan Sernoffsky mentioned, “Our officers are working diligently on this investigation and following multiple leads.” Fortunately, there were no other victims, and no arrests have been made so far. The nature of the event remains unclear, especially in relation to the Super Bowl that took place just hours earlier in Santa Clara, featuring White’s former team, the New England Patriots.

The 49ers released a statement later in the day, confirming White’s injury and that updates would follow. Photos shared by White on Instagram show him at Super Bowl 60, wearing a Patriots hat.

This isn’t the first time a 49ers player has faced gun violence in recent times. In August 2024, receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery but recovered fully after being treated for a bullet wound that missed vital organs.

Keion White was drafted in the second round by the Patriots in 2023. In the current season with the 49ers, he has played in nine games, starting in two and recording 1.5 sacks.

As society grapples with increased violence, experts in criminal justice highlight that events like these shouldn’t be taken lightly. According to FBI data, aggravated assaults have spiked in various urban areas across the U.S., urging ongoing conversations about safety in public gatherings.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411, beginning with “SFPD.” Anonymous tips are welcome.
