ALPENA – The Alpena Community College (ACC) basketball teams are gearing up for a meaningful night. They will host the conference’s Hunger Games food drive during their last home game against Bay College at Park Arena.
Here’s the deal: fans who bring a canned food item or any non-perishable goods will get in for free. All donations will go to ACC’s food pantry, aiming to tackle food insecurity in the local community.
“Our athletic community is strong, and this is a great way to give back,” said ACC Athletic Director Allen Telgenhof. “We hope our fans will show their support for both the teams and those in need.”
The food drive is not just an athletic event; it’s a community effort led by the Athletic Leadership Council, with student-athletes helping to gather donations at the entrance.
This game is also special because it’s Sophomore Night, where the college will honor its sophomore athletes, marking their last home game. “We want everyone—students, staff, and the wider Alpena community—to come out and support our teams and our food pantry,” Telgenhof added.
This initiative comes amid growing concerns over food insecurity. According to a report from the USDA, around 10.5% of households in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2021. Local efforts like ACC’s food drive are crucial in addressing these issues.
It’s moments like these that remind us of the role sports can play in helping communities thrive. If you’re interested in more about ACC Athletics, including team rosters and schedules, check out acclumberjacks.com.
