Vande Bharat AC Chair Car Fares: How They Stack Up Against China’s, Japan’s, and France’s Prices – Insights from Vaishnaw

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently highlighted the affordability of Vande Bharat AC chair car fares, stating that they are significantly lower than those in other countries like China, Japan, and France. For a journey of 300 to 400 kilometers, the fare is about ₹2.19 per kilometer. In contrast, fares in those countries range from ₹7 to ₹20 per kilometer.

Vaishnaw explained that the fare structure considers various factors, including service costs, amenities, and the competitive landscape. Since its launch in February 2019, Vande Bharat trains have expanded to 82 routes with 164 services. These modern trains offer features like better suspension systems, faster speeds, and automatic doors.

Passenger demand for Vande Bharat services is strong, showing nearly full occupancy on major routes. This trend reflects changing preferences among travelers who are looking for swift and comfortable train journeys.

Interestingly, Vaishnaw also compared Indian Railways’ ordinary class fares to those of neighboring countries. In India, the fare is just 20 paise per kilometer, while it is higher in Pakistan (54 paise), Bangladesh (37 paise), and Sri Lanka (51 paise).

As more people choose trains over other modes of transport, the Indian Railways is evolving to meet these needs. The introduction of services like Vande Bharat illustrates a commitment to modernizing rail travel while keeping it affordable.
