Changes in Bloomington Fire Department Aim for Better Community Support and Firefighter Well-being
Big changes are underway at the Bloomington Fire Department. These new plans aim to enhance community service while ensuring firefighters have a healthier work-life balance.
Thanks to a $200,000 grant from the McLean County Health Department, the department will now offer social services directly at the scene of emergencies. Captain Frank Friend, the Public Information Officer, described this initiative as Mobile Integrated Health. It will include two social service team members who will provide assistance during emergency calls.
Friend pointed out that out of about 14,000 calls each year, around 76% require an ambulance. Interestingly, many of these individuals—almost half—could benefit from social services. “As a paramedic for over 30 years, I’ve seen many people who need help but don’t know where to turn. Now, these community navigators will bridge that gap,” he explained.
The fire department will collaborate with approximately 50 social service providers in the county to connect those in need with the right resources.
In addition to these changes, the department is altering its shift schedule. Traditionally, firefighters worked for 24 hours followed by 48 hours off. Now, they will work for 24 hours and have 72 hours off. This new model should help improve the balance between work and family life. Friend expressed optimism, stating, “This shift brings us closer to a standard 40-hour work week, giving our firefighters more time to recuperate both physically and mentally.”
This forward-thinking move not only supports the firefighters but also strengthens community ties. It reflects a growing trend among first responders to address both physical and mental health. More departments across the country are focusing on holistic approaches to care for their staff.
