In his second term, Donald Trump quickly signed many executive orders. This ramp-up in activity was significantly more than what Joe Biden did on his first day. Trump used these orders to push his Project 2025 agenda, opting for executive action due to a divided Congress.

These orders focus on reshaping federal policies in various areas, including immigration and civil rights. They’re aimed at undoing certain protections and enforcing stricter controls over gender identity and reproductive rights. A notable order is titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” which seeks to challenge existing protections for transgender individuals.

But today, let’s look closely at Trump’s energy and climate policies. These are vital issues, especially for modern Pagans who care deeply for the environment. We often view the Earth as sacred and interconnected, so any changes in environmental policy raise alarms.

Trump’s policies favor the fossil fuel industry heavily. One of his bold moves was declaring a “national energy emergency.” This declaration appears to be more about promoting oil and gas drilling rather than addressing any real crisis. It essentially allows fossil fuel companies to bypass important environmental regulations like the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act, paving the way for quicker drilling permits.

Interestingly, under Biden, oil and gas production reached record highs. So, framing this energy emergency as a solution to previous efforts may not hold water. Trump’s approach is not about a balanced energy strategy, unlike the Biden administration’s efforts to support renewable energy along with fossil fuels. Instead, he’s putting all his support behind oil and gas while limiting the development of renewable energy sources like wind.

Additionally, Trump plans to roll back many provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, which had incentivized the transition to electric vehicles. He aims to cut funding for new charging stations and initiatives to promote electric cars, marking a stark contrast to the previous administration’s efforts.

In a surprising move, he announced that the U.S. is once again out of the Paris Climate Accords. This decision may seem like a step back into isolationism. Given that Trump had previously withdrawn the U.S. from the agreement, it raises questions about how seriously our commitment to climate change will be taken on the world stage.

We’re indeed facing an energy emergency, but Trump’s actions could worsen the situation. Extreme weather events, rising global temperatures, and record heat are pressing challenges. Instead of confronting these issues, the government seems to be turning a blind eye while pushing for more fossil fuel usage.
