UNA Softball Home Opener: A New Chapter Begins
The University of North Alabama softball team is set to play at home for the first time this season. This exciting match-up against Evansville takes place at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium this Saturday and Sunday.
With a strong record of 10-4, the Lions are coming off impressive performances at recent tournaments. They went 4-1 at both the Trojan Classic and the South Alabama Invitational. Their record was a bit mixed at the Samford Tournament, where all teams finished with 2-2 records.
The series kicks off Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at noon. Fans with a valid ID can enjoy a free happy hour during the first doubleheader, while supplies last. Plus, Saturday’s game features a fun promotion called “Run for Ribeyes,” allowing kids to run the bases after the doubleheader.
All games will be streamed on ESPN+, with commentary by the “Voice of the Lions,” Benjamin Ray, along with UNA Hall of Famer Ande Jones. Fans can check live stats for real-time updates.
Recent Performances
UNA’s recent success includes a standout weekend at the South Alabama Invitational, where they earned a notable 4-1 record. Pitcher Katie Simon was highlighted for her exceptional performance, being named Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week with a 2-0 record and a 1.05 ERA.
Players to Watch
Two players have emerged as key contributors this season.
- Holly Merritt recently won the ASUN Player of the Week honor after an impressive tournament, batting .533 with two home runs. She enters this weekend with a nine-game hitting streak.
- Natalie Shaw, the senior catcher, boasts a .250 batting average and leads the team in walks, ranking her third in the ASUN and 12th nationally.
Team Dynamics
Interestingly, UNA stands out with two sets of twin sisters on the team, making them unique in Division I softball. The Simon twins and Westhoven twins bring a special dynamic to the roster, enhancing team morale and camaraderie.
