The FIA has made a key update to its technical regulations, addressing concerns around engine compression ratios. Mercedes has faced close scrutiny from other power unit manufacturers after rumors surfaced about a unique adjustment in its engine design ahead of Formula 1’s new era.
To strike a balance among teams, the FIA will now measure compression ratios at two different temperatures: the usual ambient temperature and a new benchmark of 130 degrees Celsius. This change was set to roll out in August but has been moved forward to June 1.
According to Article C5.4.3 of the technical regulations, the maximum geometric compression ratio for an engine is 16.0. Here’s how the regulations will unfold:
- Until May 31, 2026: Measurements will only be at ambient temperature.
- From June 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026: Measurements will be taken at both ambient temperature and at 130 degrees Celsius.
- After 2027: Only the hot temperature measurements will be taken.
This timeline gives Mercedes an advantage over the first seven races of the season before the new rules take effect. Although Mercedes has downplayed the significance of its engine adjustment, rival teams believe it could provide a crucial edge.
