Barbie and Sex Education star Connor Swindells is joining an impressive cast for the new dark comedy, The Entertainment System Is Down. This film comes from director Ruben Östlund, known for his work on Triangle of Sadness.

Östlund has gathered a remarkable lineup, featuring actors like Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton, and Tobias Menzies. Adding to the ensemble, new cast members include Daniel Webber, Wayne Blair, Dan Wyllie, Lindsay Duncan, Allan Corduner, Sofia Tjelta Sydness, Erin Ainsworth, Myles Kamwendo, Sanna Sundqvist, Tea Stjärne, and Swedish musician Benjamin Ingrosso.
This film takes place on a long flight between England and Australia. When the entertainment system fails, the passengers are faced with the dread of boredom, leading to rising tensions and conflicts, both personal and political.
Filming for The Entertainment System Is Down has started in Budapest and will continue for about 70 days. The production team even secured a retired Boeing 747 for the shoot. This film marks Östlund’s second English-language project. His earlier film, Triangle of Sadness, was a huge success, earning over $26 million globally and receiving three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, a notable repeat for Östlund who previously won for The Square in 2017.
The Coproduction Office is managing worldwide sales for the film, while A24 purchased the U.S. rights in a deal worth eight figures during Cannes last year.
The Entertainment System Is Down is produced by Plattform Produktion from Sweden, along with Essential Films from Germany and Parisienne de Production from France. Co-producers include major entities like BBC Film and ZDF/ARTE. The film receives financial backing from various organizations such as the Swedish Film Institute and the Norwegian Film Institute, among others.
