George Mason Softball Claims Victory Over Georgetown: A Game of Defense and Strategy
On March 4, George Mason’s softball team faced off against Georgetown, securing a 3-1 win at the GMU Softball Complex. This match was packed with defensive plays that kept both teams on their toes.
The first four innings saw no runs scored. Both teams struggled to convert opportunities, leaving players stranded on base. One standout moment came in the fourth when Tess Altevers Harris made a spectacular catch, saving a crucial out by preventing a Georgetown runner from scoring.
The turning point occurred in the fifth inning. Logan Pickford hit a triple deep to left-center, injecting energy into the Patriots. An error allowed Tess Altevers Harris to reach first base, setting the stage for Kaleigh Friend. Her timely single brought in two runs, giving George Mason a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, the defense shone again. Kamryn Inman executed a diving catch with a runner on third, saving a potential run. Then, the Patriots extended their lead when Madeline Staats hit a double and eventually scored on a groundout from Pickford, putting the score at 3-0.
Georgetown’s late-game efforts paid off when Nina Sarlo singled and scored on a groundout, denying George Mason a shutout. However, the Patriots held strong and finished the game 3-1.
George Mason’s pitchers also made their mark. Harlowe Nigh started strong, pitching one hitless inning, while Abbey Lane followed with solid innings. Bri Lencz notched her first career win, and Alyssa Rangel earned her first save, showcasing the team’s pitching depth.
Kaleigh Friend played a crucial role with two hits and two RBIs. Other contributors included Logan Pickford, who scored and stole a base, and Madeline Staats, whose double was instrumental in the scoring.
With their defense tallying a season-high of 12 assists, the Patriots demonstrated teamwork and resilience. They’ll look to build on this momentum as they enter Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend against Fordham in a doubleheader.
