In Green Bay, the Packers are making strategic moves as they face the potential loss of key linebacker Quay Walker in free agency. To bolster their defense, they’ve traded defensive tackle Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for linebacker Zaire Franklin.
Franklin, 29, has two years remaining on his contract worth $31.26 million, although there’s no guaranteed money left. For 2026, his base salary is $6.24 million, which could rise with roster bonuses. In 2027, it jumps to $8.24 million, and he could earn up to $9.005 million unless his contract is renegotiated.
On the other hand, Walker, only 25, is poised to command around $15 million per year in free agency. After the Packers chose not to exercise his fifth-year option last offseason, he became a free agent this week. Last season, despite missing three games, he achieved a career-high of 128 tackles.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed his appreciation for Walker’s contributions. “He’s been a great leader for us, but we have players ready to step up if needed,” Gutekunst said. It seems Franklin is set to fill that gap as the Packers adjust to new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s strategy.
Franklin’s journey started in 2018 when he joined the Colts as a seventh-round pick. Since then, he has developed into a key player and even served as a special teams captain. However, a shift in the defensive system last year did pose some challenges for him.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard noted the team’s aim to become “younger and faster” on defense, which contributed to the decision to part ways with Franklin. Interestingly, he led the NFL in tackles in 2024, highlighting his capability as a traditional inside linebacker.
The trade also benefits the Colts financially, giving them over $5 million in cap space. Meanwhile, Wooden, a fourth-round pick from 2023, is stepping into his own as a full-time starter. Last season, he notched a personal best of 50 tackles, which included six tackles for loss.
In the wider context of the NFL, linebacker contracts are getting bigger each year. As teams prioritize speed and versatility, younger players like Walker and Franklin are central to these evolving strategies. Staying ahead in talent acquisition is crucial, and this trade could prove vital for both teams as they prepare for the upcoming season.
