Kachchh: The Indian LPG carrier ‘Shivalik’ arrived safely at Mundra Port in Gujarat after navigating the Strait of Hormuz. Carrying around 40,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas, it docked on Monday evening. Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, confirmed that everything was in place to unload the cargo without delay.
Another vessel, ‘Nanda Devi’, is expected tomorrow. The ‘Jag Laadki’, which departed from the UAE with 81,000 tonnes of crude oil, is also approaching India. Sinha reassured that all Indian seafarers in the Persian Gulf remain safe, with no incidents reported in the past 24 hours. Currently, 22 Indian-flagged vessels are in the Persian Gulf, hosting 611 seafarers.
To safeguard energy security amid rising tensions in West Asia, India is pushing for direct talks with Iran. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently noted that enhancing dialogue with Tehran is vital for restoring maritime traffic through this crucial waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is vital for global oil trade, handling about 20% of it.
Jaishankar explained that India prefers collaboration over disengagement, which has already led to the successful arrivals of ‘Shivalik’ and ‘Nanda Devi’. However, he did mention that while some progress is being made, there’s no blanket agreement for all Indian ships yet—each vessel’s transit is managed individually.
Iranian officials have emphasized that while the Strait remains open, it is restricted to nations they perceive as hostile. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated their forces control this critical passage, highlighting ongoing regional tensions. He attributed the current insecurity to actions by the US and Israel while insisting that Iran would take necessary measures to safeguard its national interests.
