Colorado is ramping up efforts to boost colon cancer screenings. Organizations like Peak Vista are leading the way in raising awareness about the importance of early detection.
Dr. Molly Dinnen, a physician at Peak Vista, has a personal connection to this issue. Her husband was diagnosed with colon cancer at just 36, shortly after they married. Tragically, he passed away five years later, leaving Dr. Dinnen and their young son behind. This experience opened her eyes to the fact that colon cancer can affect younger people, too.
“Looking back, my husband had symptoms that could have been warning signs,” she said. “It was a wake-up call for us. Now, I see many young patients facing similar diagnoses.”
Despite the risks, not enough people are getting screened for colon cancer, according to Peak Vista. Screenings can be a game changer. Kelly Snyder from Peak Vista reports a 4% increase in screenings over the past year, but stresses that both men and women should start screening by age 45.
“Colon cancer is becoming more common in younger individuals,” she noted. “Getting screened early can make a difference.”
Snyder encourages those at risk—especially those with family histories or specific symptoms like sudden weight loss or abdominal pain—to seek screening. Peak Vista removes barriers for those who need help accessing care, offering options like virtual appointments and no-cost screenings.
Dr. Dinnen highlights the importance of being proactive about health. “People often ignore their symptoms, thinking they’re too busy,” she says. “Know your family history and don’t hesitate to push for answers. If your doctor doesn’t listen, keep advocating for yourself.”
Today, there are multiple ways to screen for colon cancer, and it’s not always just a colonoscopy. Newer, less invasive options are available, making it easier for people to prioritize their health.
