Motorola is teasing its latest flagship clamshell phone, the Razr Ultra 2026, and it’s causing quite the buzz. However, instead of the sleek design many hoped for, this model appears thicker than its predecessor. This has left some fans feeling disappointed.
Recent CAD renders shared by Xpertpick show that the Razr Ultra will have dimensions of 88.0 x 74.1 x 15.8mm when folded and 171.3 x 74.1 x 7.8mm when open. It’s noteworthy that, while the difference is small—just 0.6mm when open and 0.1mm when closed—this still marks a departure from the general trend of slim, lightweight foldable phones. Many manufacturers have been working to make their devices sleeker, which makes Motorola’s decision seem puzzling.
Take Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Flip 7, for instance. It trimmed down its design by over a millimeter. Experts suggest that slimmer devices are generally more appealing. According to a recent survey from Statista, around 60% of consumers prefer smartphones that feel light and fit comfortably in their pockets.
Of course, it’s possible that this added thickness could allow the Razr Ultra to fit in better hardware. Perhaps we’ll see improvements like enhanced battery life, support for the newest Qi2 wireless charging, or better camera features. Until Motorola releases more information, fans can only speculate.
Interestingly, reactions on social media have been mixed. Many users express excitement over new features, while others lament the missed opportunity for a more refined design. Given today’s market, where sleek and compact devices are favored, Motorola might have to work hard to win back critics when the Razr Ultra hits shelves later this year.
It remains to be seen if this strategy will pay off for Motorola. As the foldable phone trend expands, consumer preferences could shift even more. For now, tech enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting more details on this bulky, yet potentially advanced, device.
