RF Buche and Pittsburgh Steelers Players Take a Stand Against Food Insecurity in South Dakota

RAPID CITY, S.D. — In South Dakota, about 1 in 5 people face the challenge of food insecurity, with children making up nearly 40% of those affected. RF Buche, a passionate advocate, emphasizes the need to give a voice to those struggling, especially in rural and tribal communities that often go unnoticed.

To tackle this issue, Buche organized a unique pheasant hunt fundraiser in Dallas, South Dakota. This event gathered local leaders and players from the Pittsburgh Steelers, aiming to raise money for food access initiatives. All proceeds from the event will go to Team Buche Cares, which helps provide holiday meals for struggling families in South Dakota.

Steelers player Zachary Frazier expressed his support for the cause after learning how the funds would directly benefit food needs on reservations. He shared, “Mixing hunting and a good cause, it’s a pretty cool event.” Similarly, Mason McCormick, a South Dakota native and Steelers guard, admitted he was unaware of the extent of food insecurity in the state during his childhood. “When I became aware, it was awesome to be able to come out here and be a small part of RF’s mission,” he said.

Food insecurity can hit hardest in areas far from major cities where grocery stores aren’t easily accessible. Buche illustrated the hardship faced by families living up to 45 miles from the nearest grocery store. In such cases, paying for a ride can mean sacrificing other essentials like food or diapers. “What we’re trying to do is get the food right out to them,” he stated.

Recent data shows that food insecurity is not just a local issue; it’s a national concern. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 10.5% of U.S. households were food insecure in 2021, highlighting a persistent problem affecting millions.

Engagement from community members and organizations can help bring about change. Initiatives like these shine a light on food access challenges and the crucial need for support systems. For those interested in helping, you can learn more about Team Buche Cares on their website.

Together, we can work towards ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food.
