Sri Lanka’s Fuel Support from India: A Lifeline Amid Crisis
Colombo: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending an oil shipment to ease the country’s fuel shortages, triggered by conflicts in West Asia. The shipment, which arrived in Colombo, included 38,000 metric tons of fuel—20,000 MT of diesel and 18,000 MT of petrol—provided through the Indian Oil Corporation’s local operation, Lanka IOC.
On social media, Dissanayake commented, “I spoke with PM Modi about the fuel supply issues due to the Middle East conflict. I’m grateful for India’s quick support.”
This support highlights the significant cooperation between India and Sri Lanka on energy needs. Dissanayake also thanked India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for his assistance, noting the importance of close coordination amid this challenging situation.
In recent weeks, Sri Lanka faced severe fuel supply disruptions. Since March 15, the government implemented strict fuel quotas to manage growing demand and limit hoarding, which led to long queues and public frustration. Authorities even took legal action against those hoarding fuel, reflecting the seriousness of the crisis.
Current statistics indicate that Sri Lanka is expected to have enough fuel to last until the end of May, easing immediate concerns. However, as energy demands fluctuate globally, expert insights suggest that countries in similar situations should invest in energy sustainability practices. This could help nations like Sri Lanka manage future supply issues better and enhance their resilience.
The action taken by India also aligns with a broader trend of cooperation in the region. According to a recent report from the Asian Development Bank, maintaining stable energy supplies has become increasingly crucial for economic stability in South Asia.
