Every year on March 30, Palestinians observe Land Day, also known as Yom al-Ard. This day serves as a reminder of a significant event from 1976, when six unarmed Palestinians were killed during protests against the confiscation of their land by Israel. Over 100 others were injured in these protests.
On that day, Israel planned to seize 2,000 hectares (about 4,942 acres) of land in the Galilee, a move aimed at transforming the area to favor Jewish settlers. The protests were most intense in Palestinian towns like Sakhnin, Arrabeh, and Deir Hanna.
Today, Land Day is marked not only in Israel but also in the occupied Palestinian territories, which include the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank. Activities include protests, vigils, and planting olive trees. This symbolizes the Palestinians’ enduring connection to their land, despite ongoing challenges. Unfortunately, these gatherings often meet with a strong military response from Israel.
In recent years, Israel has continued to seize Palestinian land under various pretexts, including designating areas as military zones. For example, on February 8, 2026, a new decision by Israel’s security cabinet facilitated the sale of Palestinian land to Israeli settlers, a move criticized internationally as a form of annexation.
Data from Peace Now, an Israeli NGO, highlights a worrying trend. In 2023, Israel sanctioned over 12,000 new housing units for settlers. This number increased to nearly 28,000 planned for 2025, suggesting a significant escalation in settlement activities. Such developments make it increasingly difficult for Palestinians to access their land and disrupt any hopes for a viable Palestinian state.
Additionally, reports show the rate of settler violence has surged. In 2022, there were 852 recorded incidents, rising sharply year by year. By 2025, this figure had climbed to 1,828 instances of violence, averaging about five attacks daily. The United Nations reports that over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023 due to violence from Israeli troops and settlers.
In a disturbing development, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich recently called for the annexation of southern Lebanon, advocating for a “change of Israel’s borders” to extend toward the Litani River. This suggestion has raised alarms given the displacement of over a million Lebanese people during ongoing conflicts.
As conflicts evolve, Land Day serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by Palestinians. It’s not just about land, but about identity, history, and the ongoing quest for rights and recognition.
