Victims of Napa County Multi-Car Crash Identified; DUI Suspect Arrested, Says CHP

Three women tragically lost their lives in a three-vehicle crash on Silverado Trail in Napa County. The accident occurred on Saturday morning and left six others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

On Monday, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims: 65-year-old Vivian Bertolino and 62-year-old Linda Wolters, both from American Canyon, and Katrina Clarke, also 65, from Sacramento. The driver of a Mitsubishi, which was involved in the collision, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. His history includes prior arrests for driving offenses and possession of a controlled substance.

CHP Officer Marc Renspurger explained how the crash unfolded. The driver of the Mitsubishi sideswiped an oncoming BMW SUV, causing him to lose control. He then crossed into the northbound lane, leading to a head-on collision. Bertolino and Wolters were in the Mitsubishi, while Clarke was a passenger in a Toyota Prius that was struck.

This stretch of road has a concerning safety record. Officer Renspurger noted, “That stretch of road has become rather deadly in Napa County.” He emphasized the importance of slowing down on these two-lane roads, as there are few protections against cross traffic, aside from good driving practices.

Statistics show that DUI-related accidents have been rising in California. A report by the California Office of Traffic Safety indicates that in 2021, alcohol-impaired driving fatalities increased by over 30% compared to previous years. This emphasizes the need for stronger enforcement and community awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.

The driver responsible is still hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to survive. This incident serves as a harsh reminder of the impacts of reckless driving and the need for caution on the roads.
