Judd is stepping into an exciting new role as the director of the UC Center for Public Health. Her mission? To create dynamic research programs and apply strategies that connect science and real-world health practices. This new direction aims to change the way academic medicine impacts health outcomes.
Judd’s journey started as a research engineer in consumer products before she shifted her focus to public health. She earned a master’s degree in epidemiology and a PhD in nutrition sciences from Emory University. Her research is vital; it delves into how diet and the environment lead to racial disparities in diseases like stroke, hypertension, and kidney issues. Remarkably, she has identified dietary patterns that account for up to 63% of the difference in stroke risk among racial groups.
Throughout her career, Judd has made a significant impact. She has mentored over 60 scholars and worked internationally, including a stint as a Fulbright Scholar in France. In her role as assistant dean at UAB, she helped launch an undergraduate program that expanded to over 500 students in just four years.
“I’m thrilled to take on the role of the inaugural director of the UC Center for Public Health,” Judd said. “Public health is critical for community well-being. I’m eager to build a center that drives innovation and partnerships, leading to sustainable solutions for our area’s biggest health challenges.”
Judd will start her new role on September 1, 2026. Her plans echo a growing trend in public health that emphasizes community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. A recent study by the American Public Health Association found that community-based initiatives can significantly improve health outcomes, reinforcing the importance of Judd’s vision.
