In today’s digital world, AI-generated content is becoming part of our everyday lives. As a writer and creator, it’s unsettling to think that my work might be mistaken for something a machine made. This concern is shared among many creators, prompting discussions on the need for clear labeling to distinguish human-made from AI-generated content.
Recently, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, suggested that instead of trying to identify fake media, we should focus on verifying real content. This idea came as AI tools grow more sophisticated, creating images and texts that are hard to tell apart from human creations.
A survey by the Reuters Institute highlights our collective uncertainty. Around 67% of participants believe that much of the content on social media and news sites is AI-generated. We can’t easily measure how much of what we encounter online is real or fake, but the worry is palpable.
Some solutions, like the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), aimed to help verify human-created works but have struggled to gain traction. Many creators feel the pressure to label their work, especially as the popularity of AI content soars. While platforms like Proudly Human and Not by AI have emerged, the effectiveness and trustworthiness of their verification processes vary widely.
Experts suggest innovative approaches to create labels that carry weight. For example, Jonathan Stray from UC Berkeley argues that simply using AI in the creative process complicates what it means to be “human-made.” Nina Beguš, a lecturer at UC Berkeley, points out that AI is now a significant part of many tools we use for creativity, pushing us to redefine what authorship means.
One newer method involves blockchain technology, which can securely keep a record of who made what. This creates a valuable certificate of authenticity for human creators. Thomas Beyer from the University of California’s Rady School of Management highlights how this system could help shift the conversation from whether something looks like AI to proving its human origin.
However, the landscape is still somewhat chaotic. There are at least a dozen different labeling systems, each with its criteria and legitimacy. Some are based on visual inspection of works, which can often be unreliable.
Public reaction varies. While some creators enthusiastically explore AI tools, others are wary of being open about using them due to fears of backlash. For instance, a romance author recently garnered significant income by publishing AI-generated works but chose not to disclose this information, worried that it would damage her reputation.
Amid this backdrop, there’s a clear demand for standardization. If we can agree on a recognizable certification, much like Fair Trade or Organic labels, it could restore trust in what we see and read online. Conversations among creators, platforms, and government regulators are needed to pave the way for a unified approach.
