Robert F. Kennedy Jr. once impressed me with his work as an environmental lawyer. Back in the early 2000s, he fought against industrial hog farms polluting our streams and rivers. We even planned a trip to North Carolina to document the mess they were causing.
However, things changed when he started pushing for articles about childhood vaccines, claiming they caused autism. I had researched vaccines and found his views unscientific and dangerous. His strong stance made me question his judgment overall. I felt it wasn’t right to cite someone with such a mindset.
It’s especially concerning when we think about health leadership. If someone is hesitant about vaccines, they might not be the best choice to guide public health efforts. One major threat we face today is an avian flu pandemic, which is evolving and spreading to mammals. Vaccines will be crucial if that happens. In fact, the quick development of COVID-19 vaccines through Operation Warp Speed saved countless lives.
Now, imagine if we needed another initiative like that, but the health lead is skeptical about vaccines, even the ones that helped tackle the last pandemic. Kennedy has falsely claimed that the COVID-19 vaccine is “the deadliest vaccine ever made” and even petitioned against it, ignoring the fact that it saved over 140,000 lives by that point. His opinions pose a serious risk to public health, especially at a time when we need strong support for vaccines to keep us safe from future health crises.
