It illustrates the stark links between eating meat, biodiversity loss, water pollution, soil deterioration, and climate change. The organization urges everyone to reflect on their eating habits for a healthier planet.

The rainforest is being cleared to grow animal feed and raise cattle. These animals often endure long, inhumane transport to end up in markets far and wide. This practice harms the environment and is unethical. A vegan diet is key to real environmental protection,” says agricultural scientist Lisa Kainz from PETA.

Animal products are among the largest contributors to climate change, contrary to popular belief that soy is primarily responsible for deforestation. In reality, extensive forest land is cleared mainly for livestock farming. In just one year, approximately 12 million hectares of rainforest—equivalent to about 30 football fields per minute—were lost to deforestation. A significant portion of imported soy is used as animal feed in Germany, further contributing to the issue.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization states that agriculture is responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, though recent studies suggest it may be closer to 30 percent. A major share of this impact comes from livestock farming, surpassing all forms of global transport combined.

The conditions for transported animals can be horrific. Some cattle are slaughtered in Brazil while others endure long journeys to distant slaughterhouses. In PETA’s video, we see cattle cramped on trucks, suffering in unsanitary conditions. Many are shipped for weeks, often leading to injuries and deaths during transit. Dead animals may be thrown overboard, and nutrient runoff contributes to ocean degradation.

Ultimately, these practices underscore the urgent need for change. Reflecting on our dietary choices not only helps reduce environmental damage but also promotes animal welfare.
