How Teen-Led Roots Media Transforms Climate Anxiety into Action Across Devon

A group of teenagers in Devon is turning climate anxiety into action through their social enterprise, Roots Media. Founded in 2024 by students from Churston Ferrers Grammar School, this initiative aims to inspire and empower youth to tackle environmental challenges.

The co-founders—16-year-olds Lucas Brendon, Matt McEwen, and Fyn Nadin—set out to make a difference after realizing the heavy burden climate change places on their generation. What started as a class project has blossomed into a vibrant platform that merges media, fashion, and activism. Their clothing brand donates 100% of profits to local environmental projects, and they’ve already raised over £3,000 to support sustainability and conservation efforts.

Lucas, now the Director and Head of Media, expressed the group’s mission: “We wanted to create a space for young people to take action now, not in the future.” Their work includes a podcast called Turning the Tide, which features conversations with leaders like Riverford’s Guy Watson and marine biologist Dr. Imogen Napper.

A survey conducted by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs reported that 85% of young people feel anxious about climate change. Roots Media addresses this concern directly, providing an outlet for youth to express their feelings and take positive steps forward.

Lucas has also shared his insights on various platforms, discussing topics like social enterprise and environmental issues. His recent appearance on Radio Exe featured a conversation with criminal psychologist Julia Shaw about environmental crime and its implications.

As Roots Media continues to grow, the founders hope to reach even more young people, inspiring them to join the fight for a sustainable future. This grassroots movement not only amplifies youth voices but also builds a community committed to protecting the planet.
