BROWNWOOD – April 16, 2026 – Four students from Howard Payne University (HPU) were recently named Sumners Scholars by the Sumners Foundation.
The scholars are Rylie Burden (jurisprudence), Ana Faulk (history), Kourtney Melton (history), and Harmonie Pittman (accounting). They were chosen through a competitive process, culminating in the Sumners Luncheon on April 9.
“I’m thrilled for these new Scholars. I can’t wait to see them grow over the next two years,” said Charles Lewis, HPU’s director of development. He highlighted the foundation’s 75-year legacy of supporting students.
The Sumners Foundation aims to encourage understanding of democracy. It provides opportunities for students to study self-government and participate in events with civic leaders. Each Sumners Scholar receives a $7,500 scholarship per semester, covering tuition, fees, and more during their final two years. To keep their scholarship, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
During the luncheon, some Sumners Foundation trustees interviewed applicants and honored graduating seniors. Recognized were Madeline Duncan (psychology), Kellen McKee (biochemistry), Addison Roden (finance), and Adrielle Sloan (strategic communication). They expressed gratitude for the support and opportunities provided by the foundation.
According to a recent education survey, 65% of students believe scholarships significantly impact their college experience. Programs like the Sumners Foundation are vital for students seeking to focus on their studies without the burden of financial stress.
The Sumners Foundation’s mission resonates with many, as social media trends show growing discussions around the importance of education funding and civic engagement. Users express their support by sharing stories of scholarship impacts, creating a sense of community among beneficiaries.
