“Kentucky Launches Exciting New Program to Reward School Districts for Using Local Food Products” – NKyTribune

Good news for Kentucky schools! They can now earn cash rewards for using locally grown produce and proteins thanks to a new initiative from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA).

The program, called the Kentucky Farm to School Stars Recognition Program, will recognize three school districts each year for their efforts to buy directly from local farmers. Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell shared that supporting local farms benefits everyone. “Increasing purchases of Kentucky foods directly impacts Kentucky farm families,” he said. “It also helps schools provide fresh and nutritious meals for our children. It’s a win-win!”

To qualify, schools must take part in the National School Lunch Program and purchase locally grown products used in breakfast and lunch. The program will track the percentage of local foods purchased over an entire school year.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel at KDA, which will announce the winners in October during National Farm to School Month. The awards of $10,000, $8,000, and $6,000 will go to the first, second, and third place districts, respectively. These funds are intended for local food purchases in the following school year.

Where do these funds come from? They are generated through Ag Tag donations, which Kentuckians make when renewing their farm license plates. Last year, these donations hit a record of over $931,000! Commissioner Shell notes, “Each year, KDA commits to reinvesting these funds back into our agriculture community.” This time, the focus is on supporting healthy meals for kids.
