A gas station clerk in suburban Detroit played a crucial role in rescuing a teenage girl who was kidnapped at gunpoint. Authorities say his quick thinking likely prevented a much worse outcome.
On April 13, the 16-year-old girl was waiting for her school bus in Hamtramck when she was approached by a stranger with a gun. The man, who police later identified as Donald Fields, took her to a nearby Sunoco station where Abdulrahman Abohatem was working.
Abohatem noticed something was off when the man asked the girl to buy cigarettes. Suddenly, the girl mouthed the word “help” to him. Recognizing the urgency, Abohatem stepped out from behind the counter, positioned himself between the girl and the man, and ordered the suspected kidnapper to leave.
While this was happening, some of the girl’s classmates had tracked her phone’s location and alerted the police. Officers arrived just as Abohatem was escorting the man outside. He pointed to Fields and told the officers, “That’s the guy.”
The police quickly apprehended Fields, a 48-year-old registered sex offender, and charged him with multiple offenses, including kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct. A judge denied him bail.
Once safely back with her family, the girl was relieved and grateful. Her school, Frontier International Academy, expressed its gratitude for her safe return and acknowledged the community’s role in the resolution.
Police Chief Hussein Farhat praised Abohatem’s actions, calling them “heroic.” Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi commended the girl for her bravery in seeking help.
