While we can’t time-travel through the universe’s history, scientists have created an incredible simulation called COLIBRE that lets us experience how galaxies formed and evolved. The COLIBRE project uses advanced computing to simulate the dynamics of cold gas and dust, which are essential for star formation. This simulation paints a picture of our universe from just after the Big Bang up to today. It aligns with observations made by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), supporting the widely accepted Lambda Cold Dark Matter model of cosmology.

Interestingly, even seasoned astronomers are amazed by the simulation’s realism. Carlos Frenk, a key member of the COLIBRE team, said, “It’s exhilarating to see ‘galaxies’ emerge that look indistinguishable from real ones, displaying properties like luminosity, colors, and sizes similar to those we measure in actual data.”

This groundbreaking simulation runs on the COSMA8 supercomputer at Durham University. One significant achievement of COLIBRE is its capability to accurately model cold gas, a challenge that previous simulations struggled with. Cold gas plays a crucial role in star formation, and without understanding its behavior, simulations could miss key details. Joop Schaye, the project leader, emphasized that capturing this gas provides a fuller picture of galaxy formation.

Nevertheless, the simulation still has questions to answer. One mystery involves ‘little red dots’ seen by the JWST, appearing abundantly shortly after the Big Bang. Researchers speculate these could be seeds for future black holes, but their rapid disappearance raises questions. As James Trayford from the University of Portsmouth explained, “We’re excited not only about the science but also about the new ways to explore it.” This includes using simulations to make cosmic evolution concepts more relatable and accessible.

The COLIBRE findings were published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. As we dig deeper into this research, the insights gained could reshape our understanding of the universe.
