College Heights Church recently celebrated the opening of a new climate-controlled storage area for its food bank. This upgrade will allow them to store non-perishable food more effectively.
Emilia Moore, the food pantry coordinator, expressed her excitement: “We’re thrilled to have a designated space for our food donations.”
The new storage used to be an old garage, filled with dust and forgotten props. It got a new purpose thanks to the Plainview Rotaract Club. Member Elliott Idehen shared how their involvement began, saying, “During the government shutdown, we noticed many families were struggling to find food. We wanted to make a difference.”
Since it started in 2017, the College Heights food pantry has grown quickly. It now serves around 400 people regularly, and that number shot up to 500 during the recent shutdown.
The renovation project kicked off in January, with tradesmen transforming the garage into a facility that can hold up to 10 pallets of food. Gabriel Sanchez from Rotaract reflected on the project’s significance, noting, “Even as we graduate, it feels great to leave something impactful for the community.”
Alongside the storage project, the Rotaract Club also started creating “Hope Boxes.” These boxes are designed for families with young kids and will be distributed through the food pantry. They’ll include essentials like baby formula, cereal, blankets, and even Bibles.
Moore expressed her gratitude, saying, “We appreciate all the effort these students put in while also balancing their studies.”
The Rotaract Club is still seeking donations for the Hope Boxes and encourages anyone interested to reach out to them. This initiative highlights a growing trend — communities coming together to support one another, especially during tough times.
