Empowering Youth Through Local Partnerships: Celebrate Move More Month with Us!

In Orlando, the American Heart Association and the Foundation for a Healthier West Orange are joining forces through Westly’s Mile, a run club that encourages kids to stay active and build heart-healthy habits. This effort is especially important, as recent stats show that fewer than 20% of children in the U.S. get the recommended daily amount of physical activity.

Westly’s Mile is all about promoting a love for movement among elementary school students. The initiative started in Orlando and has spread to 20 schools across Orange County. More than 2,000 children have already participated, logging over 35,000 miles before school. That’s a huge step towards better health!

Krista Carter, director of Healthy West Orange, emphasizes the program’s role. She says, “By making movement a regular part of students’ routines, we’re fostering healthier families and communities.” This initiative aligns with April’s Move More Month, which urges everyone to move more and find enjoyable ways to be active.

According to the American Heart Association, children should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. However, less than 19% of U.S. kids meet that goal. Adults aren’t far behind; less than half reach the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week. Programs like Westly’s Mile provide kids with the chance to be active in a fun and encouraging environment, proving that even small changes can lead to significant health benefits.

Alise Tyler from the American Heart Association highlights the importance of community in this effort. “We want kids to understand that movement is not only essential but also enjoyable,” she states. This sentiment is echoed by parents, who report positive changes in their children’s attitudes toward physical activity since joining the program. Social media trends show growing support for local initiatives that promote youth fitness, illustrating a community commitment to healthier lifestyles.

To celebrate Move More Month, families and colleagues are encouraged to find simple ways to add more movement to their day. Some ideas include walking while chatting on the phone or hosting a virtual walk with friends. Every little bit of activity counts!
