Exciting News: India Launches Its First Dedicated Maintenance Depot for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains in Jodhpur!

New Delhi: Indian Railways is making progress by establishing its first dedicated maintenance depot for the Vande Bharat sleeper trains in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This marks a significant improvement in train maintenance and efficiency.

The depot will be developed through a partnership with a specialized technology provider. It will include modern features like automated cleaning, advanced diagnostic tools, and predictive maintenance technology. These systems are designed to spot problems before they affect operations.

The North Western Railway zone is leading this project in collaboration with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited and Russia’s Kinet Railway Solutions. The total investment for the depot is around Rs 360 crore, and the project will unfold in two phases.

Located at Bhagat Ki Kothi yard, the facility will accommodate the larger and more sophisticated sleeper trains. A 600-meter track is being constructed to hold full-length, 24-coach trains. Additionally, the depot will feature an inspection bay with three pit lines, ensuring thorough maintenance.

The first phase of the project, costing Rs 167 crore, is already underway. This phase includes essential maintenance infrastructure, office space, a training center, and storage facilities, with plans to open by June 2026.

The second phase will build on this foundation, adding more capacity and technical features. A 200-meter covered shed will allow for seamless servicing of electrified trains. Upgrades will include a workshop for simultaneous maintenance tasks and a dedicated area for wheel maintenance, equipped with a lathe for precision work. These improvements aim to speed up train operations and increase efficiency.

The depot will also have a training school to prepare staff for new technologies. Currently, the railways have invited tenders worth Rs 55 crore for a workshop and simulator facility. This facility will feature diagnostic systems and simulators to train engineers and technicians under real-world conditions.

As of now, two Vande Bharat sleeper trains are operational between Kolkata and Guwahati, with plans for another service from Mumbai to Bengaluru. This expansion reflects a growing trend in the Indian Railways to modernize and enhance train services.

According to a recent report, train usage is rising, with many passengers favoring faster, more reliable services. As the railways improve, they are gaining more confidence from travelers. This not only enhances convenience but also supports the country’s economic growth.
