Crochet shared with MassLive’s Christopher Smith that he feels “pretty confident” about returning soon. After feeling some fatigue in his last start, the team opted to be cautious. Although he’s on the IL, he’s still throwing, suggesting his absence might not be lengthy.
This season has been a rollercoaster for the 26-year-old pitcher. He’s had three strong starts, including two scoreless outings, but suffered a crushing defeat against the Twins, allowing a career-worst 11 runs in just 1.2 innings. As a result, his ERA sits at 6.30 after six outings.
Interestingly, Crochet’s pitch velocity has dipped slightly but not alarmingly. He’s down 0.6 mph on his four-seamer and 0.8 mph on his sinker compared to last season. His lowest speeds this year occurred during that brutal game in Minnesota.
In his place, the team is playing a pitcher short today. However, Roman Anthony is also taking a break due to recent back issues, so the Red Sox maintain a full bench with Eaton.
This change means Boston will need to adjust its pitching rotation for the weekend. They could move pitchers Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez up to start on Friday and Saturday, thanks to a day off tomorrow. Jake Bennett, a promising prospect, was recently scratched from his start in Triple-A. If called up, it would be his Major League debut, and he comes in with a solid 0.86 ERA over five games.
